Mietshäuser Syndikat and VrijCoop

From the beginning Stad in de Maak has been inspired by the German Mietshäuser Syndikat. This organisation, grounded in the German squatter movement of the 1980’s, at present consists of about 120 different autonomous co-housing (and mixed use -working and -cultural) projects. Each of the projects is self-organized and largely autonomous in its day to day decision making. The buildings are collectively self-managed and owned by the people living there. They pay rent to their own coop. The rents are kept low, and not having any money is never reason for not being admitted.

The ‘umbrella’ organisation Mietshauser Syndikat has a share in all the individual projects and can veto major systemic decisions, most notably the sale of the property. Because of this structure, the projects are in effect taken off the (speculative) market. Besides that, the Syndikat offers know-how to new co-housing projects. Know-how that was gathered over time in the more than 100 self-built and managed projects. Since the older projects have paid off their loans, but keep on paying rent, the Syndikat, or the individual members, can now also offer financial aid in starting new projects.
Thus the principles of self-organisation and management, of solidarity and of non-speculative, affordable housing for all have been firmly embedded in all the groups that together make up de Syndicat.

For a couple of years several groups in the Netherlands have talked about starting our own Syndicat. This has been achieved this year by starting de vereniging (union) VrijCoop. Stad in de Maak is one of the founding members. A direct copy of the German model proved not possible because of different legal systems. But we managed to stay very close to our inspiration. Several projects are about to start, EcoVillage Boekel probably being the first.
At Stad in de Maak we have been trying several times to bid on derelict buildings in order to escape the temporality of our current houses. Having been severely outbid by the ‘market’ on these occasions, we still have good hope that we will succeed soon.

SIDM X PhED FLIP

Two CreativeMornings; one Empathic, one Shocking

The last Fridays of September and October the ground floors of Pieter de Raadtstraat 35-37 hosted the breakfast meetings of CreativeMornings Rotterdam. We were just a node in an international network of breakfast plus lecture meetings for creatives that take place at the same time in cities all over the world.

The first meeting on Friday 25 September was themed Empathy. After a glorious Chinese breakfast prepared by Ni Nan and Roy (on mirror tables reused from an intervention by Petra Blaise in Huis Zonneveld), the lecture by Sam Nemeth and Ideas (nickname of Syrian refugee Mohamed) really touched a nerve (and our hearts). Especially because of the influx of refugees in Europe and the growing controversy about this in our country.

Sam and Ideas talked about their meeting on Lesbos where Ideas had landed after deserting from the Syrian army and living for a while at his grandma’s place before taking the Turkey Route to Europe. From the moment they met they stared a social media conversation which was published on the website Ideas Odyssey.
Ideas is now safe in the Netherlands with a permit to stay. After the lecture Sam mentioned that Ideas/Mohamed was still looking for a house. We are happy to announce that now a month later he is going to live in one of our houses.

Tom Six @City in the Making — Tom Six @ City in the Making

After this empathic Friday with a nice ending, next meeting on Friday 30 October was a sort of a Shock. Well that was that month’s theme, so we were warned. After another beautiful breakfast (with a shocking culinary ending) by Ni Nan accompanied by an acoustic set by Princeton, director Tom Six talked about his trilogy The Human Centipede, the most controversial of all schock-horror movies. For those who are not acquainted with his work, let’s just say that it’s all about connecting people. Tom was very open about his goals and ambitions, basically to become famous by doing something shocking and controversial. And it must be said he accomplished this goal fully and went to the limit to achieve it. Most of the audience seemed to take it by their strides (some left) and the discussion afterwards was ehh … lively.

Ruimte Reiziger bezoekt Stad in de Maak

De Ruimte Reiziger, een documentaire film van Maarten Slot over zijn zoektocht naar zijn rol als ruimte makende kunstenaar in participatieprocessen, volgt de hoofdpersoon/maker die tussendoor enige gelijkgestemde kunstenaars ontmoet. Daan den Houter, Floris Visser, Bart Groenewegen en Guido Marsille, alle vier als inwonend of –werkend kunstenaar betrokken bij Stad in de Maak worden onder anderen geïnterviewd.
Tussendoor ook nog enige, nu al historische, opnamen van het getimmer en gedoe op de Pieter de Raadstraat (van ca 5.00 tot ca 9.00 minuten) dit voorjaar.
Er is veel veranderd in het afgelopen halfjaar, en die wasserette is er gekomen.

Pieter de Raadtstraat locatie voor een prijswinnende film ‘Poppenkast’

In het weekend van 21 tot en met 23 augustus streden 52 teams om de prijzen tijdens de 48 uur filmwedstrijd van Rotterdam. Bij deze competitie krijgen filmmakers op vrijdag om 19:00 een reeks opdrachten: op zondag moeten ze aan de hand daarvan een film gemaakt hebben van maximaal 7 minuten.

Probably Pollos is een team met meerdere ervaren filmmakers. Een ervan is de hoofdrolspeler, Erik van ‘t Wout, die als twaalfjarige al furore maakte in de hitserie Q&Q en later verschillende Nederlandse series regisseerde (zoals Baantjer en Dokter Deen).

De film werd opgenomen in twee ruimtes (en het trappenhuis) van de Pieter de Raadtstraat 35 en 37: de vergaderruimte op de eerste verdieping (die voor de gelegenheid werd omgebouwd tot een therapieruimte) en de werkplaats achter de buurtwasserette (waar een atelier van een beeldend kunstenaar werd ingericht, inclusief kunstwerken). Op vrijdag schreven de schrijvers het scenario op het kantoor, op zondag werd er hard gewerkt om de edit van de film op tijd klaar te laten zijn. Tijdens dit filmopnames heeft het team een paar keer aan de bewoners en gebruikers van het pand moeten verzoeken om ‘even niet te lopen of het toilet door te trekken’, waar gelukkig iedereen heel begripvol op reageerde.

Een week later werden de prijzen uitgereikt: de film was volgens de jury (Joke Bruis, Cynthia Abma en Peter Hoogendoorn) de op-een-na beste. Ook won de film prijzen voor beste acteur, beste scenario en beste regie (en kreeg meerdere nominaties). Vooral voor Erik was dit een prachtig moment: in zijn veertigjarige carrière was dit zijn eerste prijs!

Het team van Probably Pollos wil de bewoners en gebruikers van de twee prachtige panden hartelijk bedanken voor het mogen gebruiken van de ruimtes, die er zeker aan hebben bijgedragen dat we een fijne film in elkaar hebben kunnen zetten!
