Saturday 2nd July City in the Making went on the annual Fieldtrip to Belgium. We visited the magnificent Verbeke Foundation (great art in nature plus presentations of Theo Jansens Strandbeests and the work of Zoro Feigl), Community Landtrust projects and Josaphat commons, both in Brussel. As usual we prohibited selfies and took a few Groupies (group Photo’s)

Het kleinste volkstuincomplex van Nederland geopend in Rotterdamse Agniesebuurt
Persbericht Rotterdam – 23 juni 2016
In de Rotterdamse Agniesebuurt is ‘De Schout’, het kleinste volks-tuin-hobby-complex van Nederland geopend. Het complex is gelegen in een 50m2 verhoogde border op het plein aan de Schout Heynricstraat. Deze border is door de gemeente beschikbaar gesteld voor bewonersinitiatieven. Het complex huisvest een kruidentuin, een klein maïsveld, diverse bessenstruiken en fruitbomen, een tuinkast met gereedschap en water (opgevangen uit de dakgoot) en – al bijna af – een schuur voor buurtbewoners die voor een klein bedrag de ruimte willen huren voor hun hobby. Denk aan: fietsen opknappen, spullen repareren, modeltreinen, timmeren, kleding maken, of extra keukenruimte om jam te wecken. De eerste huurder voor de komende tijd zal aan brommers gaan sleutelen.
De Schout Heynricstraat barst van de betrokken buurtbewoners! Nu hard aan het werk aan De Schout.
Latifa onderhoudt samen met haar vrijwilligers de kruidentuin. De initiatiefnemers van Stad in de Maak, die werken in het hoekpand aan de Banierstraat 62A bouwen en onderhouden de schuur en plaatsen een hek rondom de border om de planten te beschermen tegen honden en voetballen. Eind juni komen er ramen in de schuur en plantjes op het dak.
De bedoeling is om bij voldoende enthousiasme meer schuurtjes beschikbaar te maken voor buurtbewoners met een hobby. Heb je plannen of zoek je ruimte? Bel even aan bij de Banierstraat 62A, wij zijn drie kunstenaars en hebben hier ons atelier.
De feestelijke opening is gepland in augustus met eten en drinken. Meer info volgt!
Dit project wordt ondersteund door een bijdrage van de gebiedscommissie Noord en Stad In De Maak en maakt onderdeel uit van het Art of the Impact project Pioniersmeent De Stokerij.
Open Dag Stad in de Maak / 18 juni 11.00 -17.00
Op 18 juni 2016 aanstaande, de Dag van de Architectuur, houdt Stad in de Maak een Open Dag.

De Open Dag is onderdeel van het Rotterdamse bezichtigingsprogramma van de Dag van de Architectuur. In het hoofdkwartier van Stad in de Maak aan de Pieter de Raadstraat zijn alle ruimten te bezichtigen en worden er activiteiten georganiseerd. De overige panden kunnen bezocht worden tijdens een speciale fietstocht om 15.00 uur.

In aankomst: Pioniersmeent De Stokerij
In de afgelopen jaren is er door ontwerpers en kunstenaars een belangrijke bijdrage geleverd aan ‘wicked social problems’, onder meer rond thema’s als ‘meenten’ (commons), alternatieve economie, en sociale, ecologische en economische weerbaarheid en zelfwerkzaamheid in het algemeen.
De urgentie om met pionierswerk een ander stedelijk toekomst-perspectief in de dagelijkse praktijk van de stad te testen, heeft twee jaar geleden tot de start van Stad in de Maak geleid.
Van september 2016 tot voorjaar 2017 zullen de Stad in de Maak ‘commons’ op de begane grond mede worden gebruikt voor het project Pioniersmeent De Stokerij. Een groep kunstenaars wordt gevraagd om door middel van artistieke en/of sociale en/of economische interventies met ons mee te experimenteren. Lees verder “In aankomst: Pioniersmeent De Stokerij”
Spaces for work and living – a future built from “scratch & scrap”
Over the past few years of creating affordable living- and workspace in the city, we have come a long way from the very few initiatives we had found acting in this field, to the current pool of citizens that are about to (or in de midst of!) taking part of the cities’ space into collective use. And like us, most of them have found that it is urgent to take this effort beyond the often temporary access we have been able to achieve till now. How can we secure permanent access and control over the spaces so vital to our lives?
On 28th of May, an international group of city makers came together at the Stoking House of City in the Making, to discuss the current state of affairs. It is interesting to see new urban communities arising from these efforts, and observe how they build a new future on the often disregarded, outlived or scrapped resources that are available in the city. But in the increasingly market dominated sphere in which even citizens’ initiatives find themselves acting, this often means that we have to take ourselves to that same market of real-estate to buy up the remains we aim to give a new, collective future. For most of us, that means a tough puzzle of mobilising enough capital to “save” the buildings for our cause.
Hence, we have extended discussing that challenge during the rest of the day in the context of the Re:Kreators network (aka fellow city makers) which is currently forming in Europe. One of the challenges is to match the acquisition of real estate (buying it in order to bring it into common, anti-speculative ownership) with the mission of keeping spaces affordable.
Of course, the exchange of experiences and expertise among the initiatives is already proving crucial and inspiring when facing this challenge. But we could take it a step further: by forming networks that can set up a revolving investment fund together, so that at least the seed funding necessary to make a start can be quickly mobilised. It is an idea quickly gaining traction in several of the discussions we have been feeding into: from the upcoming Re:Kreators to the VrijCoop (the Dutch branch of the Mietshäuser Syndikat) currently set up. A crucial bit of urban economy being re-invented?
Bcademie @ Banierstraat: postacademisch beroepspraktijk onderwijs
Sinds november 2015 is de ‘woonkamer’ van Banierstraat 62 hoofdleslokaal van de Bcademie.
De Bcademie is een initiatief van Alex Jacobs en Daan den Houter om de kloof tussen
het behalen van een diploma aan een kunstacademie en de autonome beroepspraktijk te
overbruggen. Als hedendaagse kunstenaar moet je meer en meer bewust zijn van de
manier waarop je als cultureel ondernemer in de wereld staat. De Bcademie brengt jong
talent en bewezen talent samen in een zowel gestructureerde als informele sfeer waarbij
de overdracht van informatie zowel van gastdocent naar deelnemer als van deelnemer
naar deelnemer plaatsvind.
Het doel van de Bcademie is niet het artistiek-inhoudelijke gedeelte van de beroepspraktijk
als uitgangspunt te nemen maar juist de relatie van het artistiek inhoudelijk product van
de deelenemers met de verschillende markten. Galeries, curatoren, musea, initiatieven,
critici, subsidieverstrekkers, sponsoren, bezoekers en andere gebruikers van kunst hebben
allemaal een andere, eigen relatie met het artistiek inhoudelijk product. Grip krijgen op
deze relaties is vaak een proces waar veel tijd overheen gaat. De Bcademie heeft als doel
dit proces te versnellen. Naast de behandeling van inhoudelijke vragen over o.a.
integerheid, noodzaak, context en relevantie is er aandacht voor praktische vragen over
planning, budget, BTW, waarde, subsidie enz.

Banierstraat: Stand van Zaken 02

At lot has been going on at Banierstraat 62, our artists house. This is the state of affairs in april 2016.
Two CreativeMornings; one Empathic, one Shocking
The last Fridays of September and October the ground floors of Pieter de Raadtstraat 35-37 hosted the breakfast meetings of CreativeMornings Rotterdam. We were just a node in an international network of breakfast plus lecture meetings for creatives that take place at the same time in cities all over the world.
The first meeting on Friday 25 September was themed Empathy. After a glorious Chinese breakfast prepared by Ni Nan and Roy (on mirror tables reused from an intervention by Petra Blaise in Huis Zonneveld), the lecture by Sam Nemeth and Ideas (nickname of Syrian refugee Mohamed) really touched a nerve (and our hearts). Especially because of the influx of refugees in Europe and the growing controversy about this in our country.
Sam and Ideas talked about their meeting on Lesbos where Ideas had landed after deserting from the Syrian army and living for a while at his grandma’s place before taking the Turkey Route to Europe. From the moment they met they stared a social media conversation which was published on the website Ideas Odyssey.
Ideas is now safe in the Netherlands with a permit to stay. After the lecture Sam mentioned that Ideas/Mohamed was still looking for a house. We are happy to announce that now a month later he is going to live in one of our houses.
After this empathic Friday with a nice ending, next meeting on Friday 30 October was a sort of a Shock. Well that was that month’s theme, so we were warned. After another beautiful breakfast (with a shocking culinary ending) by Ni Nan accompanied by an acoustic set by Princeton, director Tom Six talked about his trilogy The Human Centipede, the most controversial of all schock-horror movies. For those who are not acquainted with his work, let’s just say that it’s all about connecting people. Tom was very open about his goals and ambitions, basically to become famous by doing something shocking and controversial. And it must be said he accomplished this goal fully and went to the limit to achieve it. Most of the audience seemed to take it by their strides (some left) and the discussion afterwards was ehh … lively.

ANA DŽOKIĆ / Politics of Space and Architecture in Belgrade
Listen to this podcast: The story of Ana Džokić ‘s (yes, one of the City in the Making founding members) journey from architecture school in Belgrade just before the Berlin Wall fell until now. She talks about the many changes Belgrade went through from the falling apart of former Yugoslavia until the ‘taking over’ of city development by Arab development moguls, with the crazy proposal for the Riverfront Development as an example. Other subjects include a critique of the Luchtsingel procedure and similar ‘bottom-up’ funding, their initiative for collective self-build housing in Belgrade and her PhD work on commons.
